Cold laser therapy (photobiomodulation) is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to interact with tissues at the cellular level. Research suggests it may help reduce pain and improve function across a range of musculoskeletal conditions. Adelaide Cold Laser delivers evidence-based photobiomodulation using an ARTG-listed medical device at 528 Marion Road, Plympton Park.

What is cold laser therapy?

Photobiomodulation — also known as cold laser therapy or low-level laser therapy — delivers specific wavelengths of light into your tissues. At the cellular level, this light energy is absorbed by the mitochondria, which may trigger biological responses that help manage pain and support tissue repair.

Unlike surgical lasers, cold laser therapy does not cut or heat tissue. Treatment is painless. Most people feel a gentle warmth or nothing at all.

We use the Multi-Radiance MR5 ACTIV PRO — an ARTG-listed (370913) super-pulsed laser that delivers multiple therapeutic wavelengths simultaneously. This is the same class of device used in the clinical trials that form the evidence base for our treatment approach.

Individual responses to photobiomodulation vary. A clinical assessment is recommended before commencing treatment.

Conditions research suggests cold laser therapy may help

Each condition below is supported by peer-reviewed research. We only treat conditions where there is published evidence from systematic reviews or randomised controlled trials.

All condition pages include full citations to the peer-reviewed research that supports each claim. Individual responses vary.

Dr Sam Johnson (Chiropractor)
BSc(Chiro), MChiro — Macquarie University

Dr Johnson has been in clinical practice at this location since the practice was established in 1972 by the Stapleton family. He brings an evidence-based approach to both chiropractic care and photobiomodulation therapy, using research-validated treatment parameters for every condition.

Cold laser therapy is delivered as part of a clinical assessment — not as a standalone service without evaluation. Every patient receives a thorough assessment to determine whether photobiomodulation is appropriate for their specific presentation.

Multi-Radiance MR5 ACTIV PRO

Our treatment device is listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG 370913). It delivers three therapeutic wavelengths simultaneously:

905 nm super-pulsed laser

Penetrates deep into tissues with high peak power in extremely short bursts.

875 nm infrared

Broadens the treatment field around the laser spot.

640 nm red light

Targets superficial tissues including skin and structures close to the surface.

Super-pulsed technology delivers high peak power in extremely short bursts, allowing therapeutic energy to reach deeper tissues without heating the skin surface. This is the same class of device used in many of the clinical trials referenced throughout this website.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cold laser therapy?

Cold laser therapy (photobiomodulation) is a non-invasive treatment that delivers specific wavelengths of light to your tissues. At the cellular level, this light energy may help manage pain and support tissue repair. Treatment is painless and requires no medication, needles or recovery time. We use an ARTG-listed (370913) medical device.

Is cold laser therapy safe?

Photobiomodulation has an excellent safety profile. Across hundreds of clinical trials, adverse events are rare and typically minor. A 2025 international expert consensus confirmed that red and near-infrared light PBM does not induce DNA damage. It is not appropriate during pregnancy over the abdomen, directly over active cancers, or over the eyes without protection.

How much does it cost?

Your first visit is $99, which includes a thorough assessment and treatment where clinically appropriate. Standard sessions start from $80. Most private health funds cover part of the cost under chiropractic extras. No lock-in plans at Adelaide Cold Laser.

Do I need a referral?

No. Chiropractors are primary contact practitioners in Australia. You can book directly without a referral from your GP.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies by condition and individual. The evidence generally suggests that results are observed over a course of treatment rather than from a single session. During your first visit, Dr Sam Johnson (Chiropractor) will assess your situation and discuss what may be appropriate. There are no lock-in plans.

What conditions do you treat?

We treat musculoskeletal conditions where there is published evidence supporting the use of photobiomodulation. Currently this includes knee osteoarthritis, plantar fasciitis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, Achilles tendinopathy, post-surgical recovery support and peripheral neuropathy. We do not make claims about conditions outside the musculoskeletal evidence base.

Is cold laser therapy the same as those laser pens you can buy online?

No. Consumer devices typically deliver far lower energy levels than clinical-grade equipment. The Multi-Radiance MR5 ACTIV PRO is an ARTG-listed medical device that delivers super-pulsed laser at therapeutic parameters. The clinical evidence is based on devices with these specific characteristics.

Where are you located?

528 Marion Road, Plympton Park SA 5038 — on the Marion Road commuter corridor. We are open Monday to Friday from 7am and Saturday mornings. Phone (08) 8297 5277.
